2023 Coordinators Annual Report

Lisa Young, Coordinator GWNH

It has been quite a fruitful year with lots of changes due to the renovations but also the increase demand of the community to connect and be involved. Having the 2 rooms now operational means that we can effectively double the amount of space and classes offered to the community.

Our renovation of an installation of a new wall between the carpeted room and the hall as well as 2 new entrances/exits to the carpeted room was completed in April this year. Our thanks to State Government and Local Government for funding and carrying out the works and to Mary Den Dryver and Barb Whelan from the committee for being on the working party. Also, to Geelong Rainbow for their input. We were able to take advantage of the Easter Term Break for a great portion of the works but we also were able to utilise several other buildings for our classes including City of Greater Geelong Supper Room, Geelong West Town Hall and Virginia Todd Hall, One Care, Fairley Lodge (managed by GW Brass Band) and Uniting Church Newtown. Thank you to all of these community groups for your assistance. Vines Rd Community Centre also assisted some of our community groups during this time, which we appreciate as they also had difficulties with flooding. True community spirit!!

Geelong West Neighbourhood House 2023 Annual General Meeting Chairpersons Report

Maureen O’Keeffe, Chairperson GWNH

I would like to start by acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the land on which the Geelong West Neighbourhood House (GWNH) sits, the Wadawurrung People. We pay our respect to their Elders of the past, present, and emerging and acknowledge their continuing relationship to this land.

At last year’s AGM, Member for Geelong, Christine Couzens announced that $65,000 from the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions, had been awarded to the City of Greater Geelong (COGG) for a renovation at GWNH that would enable both the hall and the smaller carpeted room to be used simultaneously. As mentioned in last year’s co-chair reports, the original idea came from the previous committee who saw the need to increase access for more groups and activities.  I am pleased to report that the renovation took place from late March and throughout April this year, with the doors to the house reopening on the 2nd of May.
